Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is an irreversible restrictive weight-loss procedure where the majority of the stomach (75%-85%) is removed following the major curve. The new stomach is about the size of a small banana.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) is a permanently restrictive procedure for high risk morbidly obese patients. Removal of approximately 85% of the stomach, which includes ghrelin (“hunger” hormone) producing cells.

The stomach is reshaped by vertical division along the major curve. The stomach that remains is shaped like a small, very slim bananaa and mesures from 1-5 ounces (30-150cc) of volume. Over the course of a year the stomach will naturally expand somewhat.
